Capitol Region Medical Reserve Corps ( 54 )

Profile:
The MRC unit in the Capitol Region provides volunteer health professionals, medical and non-medical, to manage and share resources with ESF 8 regional partners to deliver medical care to all populations during regional emergencies and planned events. The CR-MRC's goals are to: (1) recruit units of doctors, nurses, physician assistants, EMTs, medical administrators, dentists, veterinarians, mental health workers, pharmacists and other non-medical professionals; (2) document their credentials; and (3) provide training that establishes core competencies consistent with the Unit's mission. CR-MRC manages and shares resources and coordinates strategies to deliver medical care during emergencies and planned events. CR-MRC has a director, an assistant director, a medical director and an associate medical director. CR-MRC established a badge/identification process, and participated in a multiple drills and exercises with hospital, public health and community partners. In one exercise, all major hospitals and corporate aircraft and crews in the region participated in evacuating burn victims, and the CR-MRC established a command post within 45 minutes and deployed to treat special needs victims of the power outage. Since that early time, CR-MRC has been called to support POD drills and exercises, multiple public safety/public health events, a shelter exercise, and a Pan Flu/ACS drill. CR-MRC has supported State DPH large scale Mass Casualty event and provided medical operations for a two-day statewide Vietnam Memorial event at Bradley International Airport. CR-MRC most recently partnered with Hartford Healthcare to create a team of medical and non-medical volunteers to support medical operations at the largest annual Hartford event, the Hartford Marathon. By collaborating with MRC units and volunteers in CT Region 4, CR-MRC has increased the number of volunteers available at multiple events including the 2018 and 2019 Hartford Marathon Foundation events. CR-MRC has units which are manned by non-medical volunteers such as Administration, Safety Officer(s) and one of its strongest assets a Logistics Unit. CR-MRC continues to refine our "teams" according to discipline and have identified "Unit Leaders" who work more closely with their members. Changes in healthcare, volunteer programming, and funding have challenged the CR-MRC to reevaluate the way it conducts business. A Strategic Planning process is driving the future direction of CR-MRC to be consistent with a progressive healthcare delivery system. ESF 8 partners and CR-MRC volunteers have been included in the planning process.
