Region VI MRC Regional Liaison
Sandi Wiggins is the MRC Regional Liaison for Region VI (TX, AR, LA, OK, NM) for the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Program under the Readiness Division within the Office of Emergency Management and Medical Operations, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She offers technical assistance and support to the existing MRC units in the South Central region. In addition, she aids individuals who are interested in starting an MRC unit in their local community. Sandi is dedicated to working closely with individual units to coordinate with the goals of the MRC Program and support the mission of ASPR.
Sandi Wiggins has been a dedicated community volunteer throughout her life and has had the good fortune of being able to merge this personal commitment with her chosen profession. As the daughter of a retired Army nurse and the wife of a retired Army Officer, Sandi has lived and worked in a variety of cultures and communities oversees and at home. One of her earliest volunteer memories was helping to collect trash in Tokyo, Japan in the aftermath of a large typhoon.
Sandi has over 20 years experience in the non-profit social service and infant health community and is a passionate organizer, planner, and trainer. During her non-profit years, Sandi was a co-author of a medical publication targeting physicians and was a Governor’s appointee to the Texas State Child Fatality Review Team.
Prior to becoming a Regional Liaison, Sandi served as an Assistant Preparedness and Medical Reserve Corps Coordinator in North Texas where she grew her MRC unit from 43 volunteers to almost 1,000 active members. This dedicated team provided emergency shelters and public health interventions during a number of large scale natural disasters including floods, Hurricanes Gustav & Ike, as well as H1N1 and a variety of localized public health outbreaks. She is a 2013 National MRC Mentor Award winner who truly enjoys connecting with a variety of people.
Sandi holds a Bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. She is a lover of family, friends, reading, and travel.
